Online Blackjack Rules |
Online Blackjack is one of the most exciting online gambling games to play
because while on the surface it is a simple game to play, but in reality
involves skill and understanding on the part of the player.
There are many different variations of online Blackjack. For instance, there is
European Blackjack, Downtown Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, Vegas Strip
Blackjack, Spanish Blackjack and Triple 7's Blackjack.
Some online Blackjack games which are played with one or multiple (2, 3, 4, 5, 6?
or 8) 52-card
decks. It is accepted that the house or online casino advantage is increased
with the number of decks used.
There are 'Single-Hand' Blackjack and 'Multiple-Hand' Blackjack where
players can play up to 50 Blackjack hands simultaneously.
While obviously the rules of the various online Blackjack games will differ
slightly, the basic rules of online Blackjack still apply.
In terms of card values, ten cards and
picture cards have a value of 10 points each, Aces have a value of either 1 or
11 points each, and the remainder of the cards in the deck retain their original
face values. Generally card suits play no role in online Blackjack.
The objective of online Blackjack is for your hand (or hands) to beat the
dealer's hand. This can be done by getting a 'natural 21' (also known as
Blackjack), 21 or as close to 21 as possible without busting (exceeding 21), as
long as your card point value is higher then the dealers.
For instance, a natural 21 would be when you are dealt an Ace and a picture card
in your initial two cards. A 21 would be if your were dealt a 6 and 7, and your
third card was an 8.
An online Blackjack hand starts when each player places a bet. Next, each player
is dealt two cards face up and then the dealer deals himself two cards, one face
up and the other face down.
Each player examines their cards and decides whether they want to 'stand' (keep
their cards as is) or if they require a third or more cards to get closer to 21.
(This is known as 'hitting'.) Once all the players have decided to stand, have
hit or have busted, the dealer flips over his face down card.
(Incidentally, when playing online Blackjack, the other players are of no
consequence as all action takes place between a player and a dealer).
The rules of land and online Blackjack dictate that the dealer must hit if his
cards show 16 or below and stand if his cards total 17 or higher. (Some online
Blackjack variants allow the dealer to hit on a soft 17). Getting a 'Blackjack' pays 3:2 and a regular win pays 1:1.
Hands that bust, obviously lose their bets.
If the dealer also gets a Blackjack, this results in a tie (called a 'Push') and
the player or players involved get their initial bets back.
In online Blackjack 'splitting' is when you have a pair and you can choose to
split them up and duplicate your initial bet for the second card. (Each card is
played as an independent hand thereafter). Some online Blackjack games prohibit
the re-splitting of cards, particularly Aces. (This is benefits the online
casinos).
'Doubling Down' is when a you choose to double your initial bet when you are
confident of beating the dealer. Whenever you choose to double down, you will
only be dealt one more card. in some online Blackjack games, players are only
permitted to double down on 10 or 11 or not allowed to double down after
splitting pairs.
'Surrender' is a rule that is only allowed in certain online Blackjack games and is only applicable on your first two cards.
If you choose to 'throw
in' or surrender your cards, you will get 50% of your bet back while the casino
retains the other 50%.
'Insurance' is an option to designed to protect a player
against the dealer getting a Blackjack and pays out 2:1.
