Svenska Spel Challenges Ladbrokes over Trademark |
May 8 - Svenska Spel, Sweden's state-run gambling monopoly,
is in the news again. This time, this company has threatened the UK gambling
company, Ladbrokes, with legal action regarding the latter's new advertising
campaign that is being run in the Swedish press.
Ladbrokes, which admits to running the campaign as a direct provocation
to Svenske Spel and its monopoly on the industry, is said to be pleased about
the legal threats and is hoping that the case will eventually land up in court.
Ladbrokes ran an ad which read: 'Svenske Spel, Engelska Odds' (Swedish Games,
English Odds). The first two words of the sentence used the company Svenske
Spel's typeface, something which it claims is against trademark laws.
Ladbrokes is defiant in its stand on the matter and insists that it wants the
right to defend itself. "We are not only challenging Svenske Spel with this,"
said the CEO of Ladbrokes Scandinavia, Lasse Dilschmann. "We are challenging the
politics of gaming in Sweden and informing Swedish consumers that there is an
alternative around the corner which is as secure and responsible as Svenske Spel."
Dilschmann went on to say that a lawsuit is a "dream prize" for Ladbrokes, "and
we like our odds," he quipped.
When asked whether the new advertising campaign could be interpreted as a
provocation of Svenske Spel, Dilschmann, without hesitation, said, "actually, it
is."
Ladbrokes maintains that Svenske Spel does not control the Swedish language and
said that the Swedish gambling public deserved to play through a company which
did not take advantage of its competitive monopoly by offering higher than
normal odds.
