The basic principle in Baccarat is to secure the highest value
with the cards dealt. In each round, there are only ever two hands dealt, one to
the player and one to the dealer or "Banker". Prior to each dealt hand, the
player is required to place a bet. Unlike other table games though, players are
given the choice to either bet on their own hand or the bankers. Either way, if
the player bets on the hand that turns the highest card values, he/she wins
double their money.
So how does one play? To start with, once bets have been placed,
both the player and dealer are dealt two face-up cards each. The value of the
cards are then determined before additional action is taken. Baccarat card
values are simple. Cards 2 to 9 retain their face value, an Ace is worth 1, and
10's & picture cards hold no value whatsoever. The aim of this game is to make
the highest possible value, which is 9. In Baccarat, the banker and players
alike cannot bust based on the first draw. This is because, if the two cards
dealt exceed 9, the first digit of the card value is dropped to indicate the
official card value. In other words, if a 7 and 5 are dealt, with a combined
total of 12, the first digit of 1 is eradicated and the actual card value is 2.
Once the initial draw card values have been established, the next
course of action can then be considered. If either the banker's or player's
hands total 8 or 9, no additional cards are drawn and the highest value wins.
This win is referred to as a "Natural". If the player's card value is worth 5 or
less, he/she dealt another card and the following banker rules apply.
If the Banker has:
- 2 or less: The banker draws regardless
of whether the player draws a third card or not.
- 3: The banker draws a third card
unless the player's card value is 8.
- 4: The banker draws a third card
unless the player's card values equal 0, 1, 8 or 9.
- 5: The banker draws a third card if
the Player's card values equal 4, 5, 6 or 7.
- 6: The banker draws a third card if
the Player's card values equal 6 or 7.
- 7: The dealer is not eligible to draw
a third card.
- (If the player does not draw a third
card, the banker cannot draw if his card value is 6 or higher.)
The winning hand is the one that has
the highest value up to 9. Any draw values exceeding 9 are termed a "bust" and
immediately lose. If the banker and player have the same card values, the game
is a "Push' and the original bet is returned to the player.
