Craps

There are no limits on the number of players that can participate in this
game, but there is only one person who rolls the dice. He is referred to as the
"Shooter". There are several different betting options on a craps table, and the
first betting phase is referred to as the "Pass Line Bet". Here, players win if
the first roll of dice or "Come Out" roll is a 7 or 11. If the Come Out Roll is
a 2, 3, or 12, players lose their bets. Either way, with any of these dice
rolls, the round is concluded and a new game begins. However, if the shooter
rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, the number thrown is established as the "Point".
Players can at this point change their Pass Line Bets before the game continues.
The shooter now rolls the dice continually until he secures the Point or a 7. If
he rolls the Point before he rolls a 7, all Pass Line Bets are lost.
Alternatively, if the Shooter rolls a 7 first, all Pass Line Bets are won at
1:1.
When the Point is established, a further round of betting can take place.
These are similar to Pass Line Bets and are referred to "Come Bets" and "Don't
Come Bets". Come Bets automatically win at 1:1 if the next dice rolled is a 7 or
11, and automatically lose if the dice rolled is a 2, 3 or 11. Don't Come Bets
automatically win if a 2 or 3 is rolled, but lose if a 7 or 11 is rolled. A 12
on Don't Come Bets results in a Push. With both these bets, if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9
or 10 is rolled, the dice value becomes the "Come Point". With Come Bets, if the
Shooter rolls a 7 before the Come Point, all bets are lost, and if he rolls the
Come Point first, all bets are paid. The opposite applies for Don't Come Bets.
Another variance between the two, is that once the Come Point has been
established, Come Bets cannot be altered or removed, whereas players can make
betting changes on Don't Come" bets.
Less popular bets are Place Bets, Field Bets, Big Six, Big Eight Bets and
Proposition Bets and Horn Bets. Place Bets are only valid once the Point Bet has
been set. Players bet on numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, and if their number is
rolled before a 7 is thrown, they win according to the paytable of 9:5 for a 4
or 10, 7:5 for a 5 or 9, and 7:6 for a 6 or 8. If a 7 is rolled first, all place
bets are lost. Place bets can be changed at any time during the game.
Field Bets are only valid for a single dice roll. If a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or
12 is thrown, the player wins. A 12 pays 3:1, a 2 pays 2:1 and a 3, 4 9, 10 and
11 pays 1:1. If a 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled, field bets are lost.
Big Six, Big Eight Bets are pretty self explanatory and pay out 1:1 if a 6 or
8 is rolled before a seven.
Proposition Bets are single roll bets that can be made at any time. If a 2, 3
or 12 is thrown, players win 8:1. If a 7 is thrown, the player is paid 5:1. If a
3 is thrown, this is referred to as the "Ace-Deuce" and the player is warded a
payout of 16:1. If a 2 or 12 is thrown (Aces or Boxcars), the player wins at
30:1 his original bet. Horn Bets win if 2, 3, 11 or 12 is rolled.
Craps strategy for beginners should be to adhere to the relatively basic Pass
Line Bets and Come, Don't come Bets until they feel more comfortable in their
understanding of the game. When winning consecutively, increase bets, and when
losing consistently, reduce bets. When placing larger wagers, opt for high-odds
bets as opposed to lower-odds bets. Other than that, pray for a lucky Shooter!
