Roulette

Now I have been gambling at land and online casinos for many years now, and
having an admittedly short attention span, my casino game of choice fluctuates
like the seasons and the tides, but the one game that I always end up coming
back to is roulette. I don't know if it's the spinning wheel, the sound
of the ball clicking and clacking over the grooves of the wheel or the smooth
green felt with all those enticing numbers and bets to choose from. But whatever
it is, for me roulette will always be the casino game that conjures up images of
white tuxedos, cigars, martinis and sultry women with exotic accents on the
French Riviera. And roulette is a game that has made a superb transition into
online casinos.
As you'd expect to find in the best land casinos around the world, most good
online casinos offer two versions of roulette - European (or French) Roulette
and American Roulette. The games are virtually identical except that
where European Roulette has a single zero, giving it a total number count of 37,
American Roulette boasts two zeros, giving it a total number count of 38. To
play roulette you just have to place various bets on the table using your chips.
When the dealer says 'no more bets', he spins the wheel - which is numbered from
0 to 37/38 - and releases a small white ball. Whichever colored and numbered
slot the ball lands in dictates whether the corresponding number on the table
wins or not.
In terms of roulette bets there are a few. The Straight Up bet is where you bet
on a single number. If that number comes up you'll be paid 35:1. A Split Bet is
where you place your bet between 2 numbers - pays 17:1. The Street Bet is where
your bet straddles 3 numbers - pays 11:1. As its name suggests, a Corner Bet is
where your bet straddle 4 numbers - pays 8:1. A Line Bet, where your bet
straddles six different numbers in two rows of three numbers - pays 5:1. There
are 3 columns (of 12 numbers each) on a roulette table, so a column bet is where
you bet on one or more of the columns - pays 2:1 (0 or 00 does not pay). Similar
to a Column Bet, there are 3 Dozen Bets (of 12 numbers each) - pays 2:1 (0 or 00
does not pay).
Then there are probably the 3 most famous roulette bets of all: Red/Black,
Odds/Evens and Low(1-18)/High(19-36) bets, each of which pays 1:1. These are
great bets when you are happy just to double up. However, if like me you like
going large ot going home, then go for the Straight Up and Split Bets. But
whatever your style of play, remember that roulette has been enjoyed by kings
and the upper classes for hundreds of years and whether you fall into that
category or not, it is a game that both levels and elevates all men (and women).
