Texas Hold'em in land-based and at online casinos, is not played with other
players however, but against the dealer. In order to participate in a round of
Texas Hold'em, players are required to place an ante. This is essentially a
purchase requirement in exchange for cards. Once the player has put in his ante,
he is dealt 2 face-up cards. The dealer gives himself 2 face-down cards and then
produces 3 face-up community cards (called the "Flop"). The player now
determines whether or not to continue playing based on the cards in his hand,
coupled with the community cards. The player may have already secured a hand
with which to place a confident bet, or alternatively, he may feel that there is
an opportunity to pursue a hand further. Either way, in order to see the next
flip card (called the "Turn"), the player needs to place a bet equal to that of
the original ante bet. If, at this point, the player feels his chances are
unlikely, he can fold and surrender his ante bet. Remember, as with all poker
games, the player is required to trump the dealer's cards in order to win. As
such, he should not only be examining his own card value potential, but also
that of the dealer. If, after the Turn, the player remains confident that he has
a chance of winning the hand, he can place another bet to see the last card
(called the "River"). Once again though, he also has the option to fold, but his
ante and second bet will be forfeited. After the River card has been dealt, the
dealer reveals his two cards, and the top hand wins. The dealer needs a pair of
fours or higher in order to qualify. If the dealer wins, the player's ante and
both bets are lost. If the player wins, the call bets are returned to the player
and the ante bet is paid out according to the following paytable:
- Royal Flush-100:1
- Straight Flush-20:1
- 4 of a Kind-10:1
- Full House-3:1
- Flush-2:1
- Straight or Lower-1:1
In the unlikely event that player and dealer both have seven identical cards,
it is termed a push and the players ante and call bets are returned. More
commonly however, if both the player and dealer have the same poker hand with
differing non-hand cards, either the highest non-hand card or the highest
ranking poker hand wins. For example, if both have a straight, the highest
straight wins. If both have a flush, the highest non-hand card wins.
In some Texas Hold'em games there is the option of an additional bet which is
symbolized by "AA". This bet is placed before the cards are dealt and is only
eligible for payout on hands secured on the Flop.
Texas Hold'em strategy is to try and call in the region of 80% of hands and
to fold around 20%. The reason for this is that initial bets or ante's, are lost
with every fold. Statistically, it makes more sense to call and chance a win,
than fold and consistently lose.
