After a frantic two day search for the identity of two lucky Britons who won
the EuroMillions lottery, Camelot announced yesterday that the winners
had stepped forward to claim their prizes.
EuroMillions, after a nine week rollover, boasted a prize pool of £90
million last week, and Friday's draw revealed that two players from the UK had
guessed the winning numbers to take home $45.5 million each.
The lucky numbers were 11, 19, 34, 43 and 45, with lucky star numbers 5 and
9.
The National Lottery said that the identities of the winners would only be
revealed - if they so wished - once the prizes were paid out.
"We are looking forward to welcoming these ticketholders to our millionaire's
club which is already 2,300 strong," said a Camelot spokesperson.
The latest win is the largest payout to British lottery players in the
history of the country and will put them straight onto the Sunday Times Rich
List of the UK's wealthiest citizens.
"It's extraordinary that in the years we've had the Lottery we haven't had
anyone at this level," said the compiler of the list, Philip Beresford.
Beresford advised the winners to keep mum about their win so as not to
attract the attention of fortune hunters and long lost relatives.
"If they've got any sense they'll keep very, very quiet about it or go and
live in Monaco, where they can afford to, where they'll just be one of 1000-odd
millionaires," he advised.
The pan-European EuroMillions was launched by the French Francaise des Jeux
and has paid out millions since it debuted in 2004.
Winners do not pay taxes on their prizes (except in Switzerland).
Tickets for a EuroMillions ticket cost €/£2 per line played.
