Investigators from a special crimes unit in the Tel Aviv uncovered a gambling
ring in Israel worth NIS 340 million ($90 million), it was reported by
the police yesterday.
The operation, known as Risky Bet, has been running for over two years, and
came to a head on Monday morning after 300 special officers swooped on the homes
of dozens of suspects
The under cover investigation involved investigators from a number of units,
the State Prosecution, the Tax Authority and the
Anti-Money Laundering Task Force.
Over thirty suspects from all over Israel were arrested by the police, and
scores of gamblers were summoned for investigation to discover more information.
The police said that they had seized property worth millions of dollars.
Police began Operation Risky Bet around two year ago after they received a
tip off that a 38 year old man was running an online gambling website called
bet555.net.
At the beginning of this year, the name of the site was changed to betbet.us.
In the past 2.5 years, bets worth hundreds of millions of shekels were placed
on the site.
The police said that the investigation would lead to the foreclosure of homes
and the impounding of suspects' vehicles.
Computers and servers were also confiscated to assist in the investigation.
