Poker talent seems to be run in the genes of the Hachem family of Australia,
after a second brother won a prestigious poker tournament.
Joe Hachem is known on the international poker scene for scooping the victory
title in the Main Event of the 2005 World Series of Poker.
He was the first Australian to ever win the main event and earned himself
$7.5 million. He was credited for increasing the popularity of poker - both
online and offline - in the country, and a year after his win, a record number
of Australians entered the WSOP.
This week, Joe Hachem's brother, Tony emulated his brother's poker talents by
winning the Perth leg of the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour.
This was the second event of the ANZPT in 2010, and attracted over 220
players from both countries.
The field of players was the largest seen in Perth and broke previous record
by 50%. The total prize pool ($510,600) was the largest seen in Western
Australia.
Tony won $132,370 for his victory, taking his tournament poker earnings to
just over $300,000.
Naturally, Tony still has a long way to go before he reaches the levels of
winnings reached by his brother Joe (over $10 million at the last count), but he
was nevertheless thrilled with his win.
"I am so over the moon," he said. "Winning this means so much to me. I have
come so close it is fantastic to finally have a title to my name."
Tony Hachem cashed in four out of the last five ANZPT events, although he did
not reach any final table until this year.
Tony Hachem has started to capture the attention of poker fans and sites, and
recently got signed up to become an ambassador for top online poker room, Poker
Stars.
