Following a decision by the National Rugby League of Australia to cut
relations with the educational poker site, FullTiltPoker.net, the Syndey
Roosters are examining their legal choices for continuing the sponsorship deal
they have with the poker site.
The government advised the NRL to suspend its contacts with FullTiltPoker.net
due to the fact that its very prominent sister site, FullTiltPoker.com offers
online betting.
Australian federal law bars unlicensed offshore gambling sites from offering
their services and products to Australian citizens.
But while the NRL has ended its relationship with the site, the Sydney
Roosters are not in such a hurry to do so, due to the fact that it enjoys a
lucrative sponsorship deal with the site.
The NRL thus advised the Roosters to check on their legal status in this
affair.
"They [the NRL] have suggested that we make sure that we consider the legal
advice in relation to specific sections of the act," said the Chief Executive of
the Sydney Rooster, Steve Noyce. "They haven't told us to pull the sponsorship,
they've just told us we should look at the advice so that's what we're doing."
Legal advisors have already told the Roosters that advertising
FullTiltPoker.net does not contravene the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.
"The important thing is that we have a relationship with FullTiltPoker.net
which is the education site and the sole activity of that is education, and you
can't gamble on that site whatsoever," said Noyce.
"Our advice initially was that provided that we advertised the .net site then
it was OK," he added.
