They say that becoming forgetful could bring problems in our day to day
lives. However, a man from South Adelaide, Australia, must be thanking his
lucky stars that his forgetfulness worked at the right place, at the right time.
The unnamed Adelaide resident picked the same numbers twice in the same
lottery draw, winning more than $2.5 million as a result.
The tale began when the man purchased a lottery ticket at the Christies Beach
Hotel. As was his habit, he used numbers that were based on his family's birth
dates, paid for the ticket and left.
Incredibly, he forgot that he had purchased a lottery ticket and went back
later to buy another - using the exact same numbers!
Imagine his absolute surprise when he learned that his lucky numbers had come
up in the draw and since he had purchased two numbers using the same numbers, he
won double the prize! While he should only have won $1.28 million, his tickets
paid out $2.5 million due to his lapse in memory.
A spokesperson for SA Lotteries, Rebekah Payne said about the incident that
the winner was in total shock that he had won the lottery twice on the same
numbers.
"He didn't realise he'd put the same entry on twice," she said. "He actually
said: 'Silly me!' Yeah, he's totally flabbergasted that his mistake has made
him a millionaire twice over!"
A similar thing occurred in South Australia a while ago, when the winner hit
the jackpot on the same numbers and was paid out double.
Searching for $1.4 Million Lottery Winner
In the meantime, SA Lotteries have asked lottery ticket purchases to check
their numbers to see whether they are the winner of $1.4 million in Saturday
night's X Lotto draw.
The winner cannot be contacted because he or she did not register the entry
with a membership card. The winning 36 game maxi pick card was purchased at Hub
Chemmart Pharmacy in Aberfoyle Park.
The lottery ticket had all six drawn numbers and the $4.2 million division
one prize pool is divided between three winners.
