The Western Australian lottery group, Lotterywest, has released the latest Australian lottery statistics for the year, which show how the total sale of lottery tickets have fluctuated year on year.

The Lotterywest report showed that overall Western Australians opted to save their money a little more instead of gambling on cheaper weekday lotteries and low-cost scratch cards.

On the other hand, the Lotterywest statistics revealed that there was a significant increase in the number of Saturday Lotto tickets bought.

Overall, sales were down for the second consecutive year when taking into account all the lottery tickets and scratchies sold to the public by Lotterywest. Year on year, the Australian lottery group saw a drop of 2.6% ($18 million) compared to the previous year.

According to the Chief Executive of Lotterywest, Jan Stewart, other reasons that Western Australians may not be buying as many lottery tickets as they did in the past, besides economic reasons, may have to do with the fact that games such as Oz Lotto and Powerball weren't carrying very high jackpots.

"While the state's economy as a whole is relatively strong, many of our players are in demographic groups which have not benefitted from the broad economic growth," she said. "There is evidence that some have reduced their expenditure on lottery products as the cost of living has increased in recent times, within an environment underpinned by caution and uncertainty."

Sale of Australian Saturday Lottery Tickets Up

Despite the fact that the sale of Lotterywest lotto tickets slipped overall, there was a marked increase in the number of the Australian gambling group's flagship Saturday Lotto tickets sold year on year.

Sales for Saturday Lotto rose 7%, bringing in an impressive $320 million for the state. This remains one of the most popular Australian lotteries.

In 2009, each adult in Western Australia spent $417 on Lotterywest products, making this the highest recorded per capita expenditure in the group's history.  In the recent report, it was shown that the per capita spending dropped $41 to $376 per adult.

The total amount won in lottery prizes in Western Australia was $382 million last year.

Lotterywest's contribution to Australian charities continued this year as well, with more than 1,000 organisations benefitting from $114 million worth of grants.  In addition, over $100 million was given to local hospitals, $12.6 to the arts and the same amount to sport in the state, and total donations made by the state increased by $1 million to $240 million.

The next Australian lottery draw is scheduled for Saturday, October 8th.  Buy your tickets online or at Lotterywest retail stores
