From the many wins coming out of Mandurah, it would appear that Santa Claus
has been early and quite busy this year. Judging from the large number of
Lotto winners in Mandurah, a quaint Western Australian seaside town, Santa
seems to have set up his headquarters at the town's local news agency!
The lucky streak for buyers of Lotto tickets from Mandurah City News agency
began in October, and shows no sign of stopping for the moment.
It all started with an unemployed man winning a Division One Saturday Lotto
draw for more than $1 million. A few days later, another local player found
himself the sole Division One Lotto winner in the nation and walked away with
the entire prize money of $4 million. Just last week, the agency sold a $30,000
scratchie, making Mandurah a lucky Lotto place.
Lucky Lotto Wins in 2011
This year alone Mandurah has sold six Division One Lotto tickets for total
prize money of about $10 million, making it by far one of WA's luckiest places
to buy Lotto tickets. The rest of the top five lucky places are Bassendean,
Kelmscott, Perth City and Clarkson.
All this good luck has naturally given the Mandurah locals a good feeling
about the upcoming Megadraw. This flurry of fortune has placed Mandurah bang in
the centre of the map for Lotto players in WA. "When we sold the second winning
ticket in October we had people come from Perth and the other side of Joondalup
to buy tickets from us" said Colin Kerr who, with his wife Leonie, runs the
Mandurah City News agency.
His staff and of course the customers are excited about the year-end bumper
event and they are betting that they will have another winner in the Megadraw.
Meanwhile, Santa seems to have been travelling a bit farther afield in WA to
spread the goodies. This weekend's Lotto draw threw up three winners from Perth
who each will take home more than $400,000. One of the three winners - a married
couple from Perth - has already claimed their prize. Of the other two tickets,
one was sold by Palmyra Supa News agency. In February this year the same agency
had sold a $1.8 million Division One Lotto ticket and now its luck seems to have
returned just in time for Christmas and the Megadraw.
The $31 million New Year's Eve bonanza run by Lotterywest is expected to sell
1.5 million tickets which works out to roughly one ticket for every adult member
of the WA population. This draw will help generate almost $7 million for
community work in the state. Tickets for the Megadraw are available until 5 pm
on New Year's Eve.
