Lottery fans in South Australia are now able to purchase their tickets online
for the first time. The move comes after SA Lotteries signed a five year deal to
make its products available online.
Up until now, SA Lotteries was the only state lottery company not offering
its products online. The group signed with oz lotteries to ensure that some of
the money spent by state residents on interstate lotteries is directed instead
to the local market.
"This new arrangement will make sure that money already being spent by South
Australians on lottery games is directed to South Australia and our local
community," said the state's finance minister, Michael O'Brien, regarding SA
Lotteries taking its products online.
He said that it made economic sense to "plug this needless leak in revenue,
estimated to be about $3 million per annum."
The deal signed with www.ozlotteries.com would not compromise the players'
safety or protection, promised SA Lotteries. The finance minister reassured
players that online protections would be tough to ensure that players could
purchase their tickets in a safe and secure environment. Measures will include
checking the player's weekly spending habits and age verification.
The Chief Executive of Jumbo Interactive Mike Veverka, which runs oz
lotteries, said that his company had the experience and proven track record to
open up new lottery markets.
"Jumbo will work closely with SA Lotteries to offer customers a first class
online buying experience and to continue improving the service to meet customer
expectations," he said.

SA Lotteries said that many of its products would be available
online, including its Saturday X Lotto tickets, Monday and Wednesday X Lotto, Oz
Lotto, Powerball, Super 66 and the Pools.
Unfortunately, instant stratchies and keno will not be available
through SA Lotteries online at this moment.
The SA government is making plans to privatise the lottery
corporation's license, and it is believed that allowing it to offer online
services makes it an even more attractive investment for interested parties.
SA Lotteries has an estimated market value of around $350
million and a number of parties have expressed interest in it, including Tabcorp
and the Tatts Group.
The government will charge a 10% premium for online sales.
According to O'Brien, online lottery purchases are currently a
"niche market", but will grow significantly in the coming years. "It is a
facility embraced by a younger cohort and there's a certain inevitability that
as time passes, the number of people using it will increase," he said.
