Exactly one year ago, a Queensland family, like so many thousands of others,
found itself struggling through major floods which crippled the area, in one of
the greatest natural disasters to hit Australia.
It took a year for the family to recover, and yesterday their luck changed
dramatically when they were contacted by Oz 7 Lotto representatives who told
them that they had won $5 million after taking out the division one of the
national lottery.
The Brassell Family purchased their tickets in the Vogue Newsagency in
Ipswich, one of the areas hit hardest in the Queensland floods. In fact, the
newsagency had been completely under water only one year ago, and it took a
further seven months before it could open its doors to the public again.
The family hadn't checked their lottery tickets and it was only after they
were contacted by the lotto by phone yesterday did they learn that they were
multi millionaires five times over.
One of the family members said in a media interview: "Last year was a very
challenging year so it's nice to start 2012 with such great news."
Asked what the Queensland flood family who won the lottery plans to
spend their money on, he replied: "It's too early to say how we'll use the prize
money, but I can assure you it will make a big difference in our lives."
He said that he was thrilled that the ticket had been purchased at the Vogue
Newsagency, which had been completely underwater during the floods and hadn't
reopened until August 2011.
"They've been through such a tough time; I make a point of giving them my
business to show my support," he said. The added publicity of selling a $5
million lotto ticket will also be a big boon to the newsagency.
Owner of the Vogue, Mike Boyland, said that he was excited about starting off
the year with a division one win. "Let's hope the good fortune continues in
Ipswich in 2012," he said.
